The Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (DoST-Pagasa) has issued a warning regarding a very strong El Niño expected to develop and persist through mid-2027.
The forecast, released in a statement on September 23, indicates that a strong El Niño is currently active in the Tropical Pacific, with expectations for it to intensify significantly.
Impacts on the Philippines and Call to Action
Prolonged rainfall deficits increase the risk of severe agricultural dry spells and water supply stress, threatening food security, water resources, energy production, public health, and the broader economy.
DoST-Pagasa Statement
DoST-Pagasa has emphasized the potential consequences of this phenomenon, predicting warmer temperatures and reduced rainfall across much of the country. These conditions could exacerbate food and water security issues.
The agency has urged local governments and relevant sectors to take proactive measures immediately. DoST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. highlighted the importance of using climate information to prepare for the impending challenges.
- Adjust farming schedules to adapt to changing weather patterns.
- Prepare communities and essential services for potential impacts.
Solidum noted that while the ongoing Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) and tropical cyclones may still bring localized rainfall, the overall trend suggests a dry season ahead.
To assist in these preparations, DoST-Pagasa has developed localized climate projections and tools like CliMap, which provide access to historical weather data and forecasts at the municipal level.
