Following the untimely death of basketball player Rene Clert Baterbonia, Coach Jess Evangelio of Ateneo de Davao University (AdDU) has urged Ateneo de Manila University (AdMU) head coach Tab Baldwin to speak with Baterbonia’s family. Evangelio believes this dialogue is essential for healing.

Community Grieves a Rising Star

Baterbonia, a standout player for AdDU, had recently joined AdMU after impressive performances, including a gold medal at the 2025 Palarong Pambansa. His life was cut short after a drowning incident during a training camp in Dipaculao, Aurora.

I hope Rene can be given peace, his family can be given peace of mind.

Evangelio expressed disappointment that Baldwin had not reached out to the grieving family. He emphasized that a simple conversation could provide much-needed comfort.

Amidst the mourning, Baldwin and AdMU team management have taken a leave of absence to ensure an unbiased investigation into the incident. AdMU clarified that Baldwin's absence from public discussions was a university decision.

In a recent video, Baldwin expressed remorse over the tragedy, stating, "I failed as a leader, that I failed as a coach… I failed as a friend to Divine and Rene." He called for prayers and support for both families affected by this loss.

As the community grapples with the implications of this tragedy, the call for communication serves as a reminder of the bonds formed within sports and the responsibility that comes with leadership.

Baterbonia's remains will be transported to his hometown in Talacogon, Agusan del Sur, for burial on June 24.
