Rene Baterbonia, a promising basketball talent from Talocogon, Agusan del Sur, aimed to transform his family's life through sports. His recent achievements underscored a commitment to his family, as he sought a better future for them.

A Young Star with a Big Heart

Baterbonia was the pride of the Davao Region, leading his team to a historic gold medal in the 2025 Palarong Pambansa. As the second eldest of seven siblings, he understood the weight of responsibility and the importance of education.

He was a boy from a poor background who simply dreamed. He dreamed not only for himself but for us as well.

Despite his success, Baterbonia faced a tragic end. On June 8, 2026, he and his teammate, Divine Adili, drowned during a team-building exercise in Dipaculao, Aurora. This incident cut short Baterbonia's bright future just days after he transitioned to Ateneo de Manila University.

His family, particularly his mother, Rovelyn, described him as someone who dreamt not just for himself but also for them. She recalled his promise to earn accolades in basketball to uplift their family's name.

Baterbonia's journey is reflective of the struggles many Filipino athletes face. He began playing basketball at 15 during the pandemic, quickly gaining recognition for his athleticism and skill. His dedication was evident as he balanced academics and sports, with aspirations to reach the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA).

In the wake of this tragedy, his community mourns not just the loss of a talented player but also an inspiring figure who embodied the spirit of perseverance and hope.

Baterbonia's legacy lives on as his siblings have been granted full scholarships to Ateneo de Davao University, ensuring that his dreams of education for his family continue.
