The Philippine government is taking significant steps to ensure peaceful and fair elections in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), scheduled for September 14. Malacañang, under President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., reassured citizens of a secure electoral process despite ongoing Supreme Court challenges regarding the polls.
Government Prepares for Historic Elections
All necessary preparations for the conduct of the historic Bangsamoro parliamentary polls this coming Sept. 14 are in full swing, and the President himself had given assurance that this key part of CAB’s political track is the fulfillment of Bangsamoro people’s aspiration for self-government.
Anton Lagdameo, Special Assistant to the President
Special Assistant to the President Anton Lagdameo emphasized that these elections are crucial for the normalization process, linking the decommissioning of Moro Islamic Liberation Front forces to the establishment of a legitimate BARMM government.
On July 13, members of the Alliance for Moral Advancement and New BARMM for All (Amana-BARMM) rallied outside the Supreme Court. Their aim was to expedite resolutions on constitutional issues related to districting, representation, and party participation rules that could affect the upcoming elections.
Amana-BARMM convenor Maulana Mamutuk highlighted that these constitutional challenges remain unresolved, which could influence voter turnout and candidate participation.
In a recent briefing, Malacañang clarified that reports of violence in the region are unrelated to the elections. Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary Claire Castro stated that these incidents stem from personal conflicts, not electoral disputes.
Castro reassured the public of the President's directive for a peaceful electoral process, underscoring collaborative efforts among the Philippine National Police (PNP), Armed Forces of the Philippines, and Philippine Coast Guard.
Additionally, the PNP is enhancing intelligence-gathering and community engagement efforts while ensuring political neutrality among police forces to bolster security ahead of the elections.
