Cotabato City Mayor Mohammad Ali 'Bruce' Matabalao has stepped down from the United Bangsamoro Justice Party (UBJP), marking a significant challenge for the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) ahead of critical parliamentary elections in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).

On June 11, Matabalao shared his decision after a period of prayer, asserting that he felt guided to transition to the newly established Bangsamoro Federalist Party (BFP). This change is particularly striking as it comes at a time when the UBJP is trying to solidify its political base.

This decision was never about me. I chose the path that I sincerely believe is best for the future of Cotabato City and our people. I know not everyone will understand. I only ask for your prayers.

Matabalao’s resignation could reduce the UBJP's standing in Cotabato City, which is not only the regional center of BARMM but also a key area for upcoming elections slated for September.

The UBJP, created by the MILF as it transitioned from armed conflict to political engagement, has faced internal challenges recently, including leadership changes within BARMM.

Matabalao's decision to align with the BFP signals potential shifts in voter loyalty ahead of the elections, with the BFP aiming to consolidate support for Macacua, who has ambitions of retaining key leadership positions in the regional government.
