The Commission on Elections (Comelec) announced plans for special elections in Dasmariñas, Cavite, set for August 29, 2026. This decision follows the House of Representatives' expulsion of former lawmaker Kiko Barzaga due to disruptive conduct.

Comelec chairperson George Erwin Garcia confirmed that the election date complies with regulations requiring a special election to occur between 60 and 90 days post-vacancy. Barzaga was removed from office on June 2, 2026.

Our fixed date is on August 29. That’s what the Commission en banc also discussed.

Garcia mentioned that Comelec will coordinate with local security and government agencies to ensure smooth election operations. The commission is also actively seeking funding, with a request already submitted to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. for P191 million from the contingency fund.

  • Over 437,000 registered voters in the district.
  • Funding challenges due to limited Comelec resources.

With a substantial voter base, the commission faces the dual challenge of managing logistics and securing adequate funding for election materials and compensation for poll workers. Garcia emphasized that the Supreme Court mandates Comelec to find a budget to facilitate the special elections.

The last special elections were held on March 14, 2026, following the passing of former Antipolo 2nd District Rep. Romeo Acop, who was succeeded by his son, Philip Conrad Acop.
