In response to the catastrophic 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Sarangani in June, GMA Kapuso Foundation, in collaboration with Nitori Philippines, has launched a relief initiative supporting 1,000 families in Malapatan.
Destruction and Need in Malapatan
The Sarangani Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office reported significant destruction, with 1,110 homes completely destroyed and 9,558 partially damaged.
Eighty percent of totally damaged houses can no longer be restored due to the unstable ground conditions, said Malapatan Mayor Salway Sumbo Jr.
Local resident Muslima Lasad shared her experience, saying, “Our ceiling collapsed, and parts of my house have cracked.”
The foundation's relief operations are ongoing, with plans for further assistance to those affected by the earthquake.
