The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has announced a significant rerouting of maritime traffic from Makar Wharf in General Santos City to Malalag Port in Davao del Sur. This measure comes after a powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Sarangani Province, severely impacting local transport infrastructure.

Acting Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez emphasized the urgency of maintaining travel and cargo services. He stated, "The President’s order to us is that the travel of our countrymen as well as the cargo should continue so that the economy will not be interrupted."

Significant Impact on Local Transportation

We will immediately start the needed rehabilitation and restoration works in order to bring back the safe and orderly conditions of the facilities and ensure continuous services for our countrymen.

Jay Santiago, General Manager, Philippine Ports Authority

Philippine Ports Authority General Manager Jay Santiago has directed the Port Management Office in General Santos to collaborate with their counterparts in Davao del Sur for the smooth transition of shipping operations. Santiago also noted that a structural assessment of the damaged facilities at Makar Wharf is underway.

While no financial estimates of the damages have been released yet, the DOTr's quick response highlights the importance of maintaining logistical connections in disaster-stricken areas. Historical data shows that similar earthquakes in the region have previously led to extensive transport disruptions, making this proactive approach critical.
