Approved earlier this year by the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, the final design of the coin has undergone some changes, notably that it features a gold finish rather than being pure gold.
- The coin's front shows Trump in a suit, with 'LIBERTY' and the years 1776-2026 inscribed.
- The reverse side features the bald eagle and the phrase 'E PLURIBUS UNUM.'
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent emphasized the coin's purpose: "to honor the enduring legacy of liberty and a lasting symbol of patriotism."
Trump responded to the announcement, calling the honor "very unusual" but expressing his gratitude. He noted that the gesture was "very cute."
However, the decision to feature a living president on U.S. currency has faced scrutiny due to federal laws against such depictions. Despite this, the Treasury Secretary has the discretion to authorize specific coin designs.
The coin's design showcases Trump with a stern expression, diverging from the originally approved version where he was depicted leaning forward over a desk.
In March, the Treasury Department made headlines by announcing that Trump's signature would appear on all new U.S. paper currency, a deviation from the norm where only the treasury secretary and treasurer's signatures are featured.
