Rescue operations in the South China Sea are intensifying as authorities search for 23 people missing following the sinking of the Vietnamese cargo ship Khoi Nguyen 18 on July 26, 2026.
The ship, carrying 62 Vietnamese nationals, encountered distress near Fiery Cross Reef, a strategically significant area of the contested Spratly Islands.
Chinese state media reported that a distress signal was first detected by the rescue vessel Nanhai Jiu 115 late Saturday.
Currently, six Chinese ships, a rescue helicopter, and a Vietnamese vessel are involved in the search efforts.
