Residents in Eastern Visayas are grappling with dangerously high heat index levels, prompting health officials to issue urgent safety warnings.
The region's Office of Civil Defense (OCD-8) reported heat indices reaching alarming levels, categorized from "extreme caution" to "danger." Authorities stressed that prolonged exposure to such conditions can lead to serious health risks.
Borongan City in Eastern Samar recorded the highest heat index at 44 degrees Celsius, placing it firmly in the danger category.
In addition, both Tacloban City in Leyte and Catbalogan City in Samar logged indices of 41 degrees Celsius, while Maasin City, Guiuan, and Catarman reported 40 °C.
Baybay City registered a heat index of 38 °C, which is still within the extreme caution range.
The heat index combines air temperature and humidity to indicate what it feels like outside, and it has been a critical metric as the dry season intensifies.
In response to these extreme conditions, OCD-8 advised the public to stay hydrated, avoid direct sunlight during peak hours, and wear light clothing.
Residents were also reminded to keep a close watch on vulnerable groups, including children and the elderly, who are at higher risk for heat-related illnesses.
Common symptoms of heat-related illnesses include dizziness, excessive sweating, fatigue, and nausea.
