The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) has issued a warning for four areas in the Calabarzon region, predicting dangerously high heat index levels. On May 7 and 8, residents of Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, and Quezon should prepare for extreme heat.
Pagasa's recent bulletin indicates that Tanauan City in Batangas and Mulanay in Quezon will experience heat indexes of 40°C. Los Baños in Laguna is forecasted to reach 41°C.
The situation is even more severe in Sangley Point, Cavite City, where the heat index could soar to 42°C on Wednesday and 43°C on Thursday.
Understanding the Heat Index
The heat index reflects the level of discomfort caused by high temperatures combined with humidity. Pagasa categorizes these levels as follows: 'caution' (27°C–32°C), 'extreme caution' (33°C–41°C), 'danger' (42°C–51°C), and 'extreme danger' (52°C and above).
During 'extreme caution' and 'danger' levels, individuals may suffer from heat cramps or heat exhaustion. Prolonged exposure or strenuous activities could lead to heat stroke.
Safety Recommendations
Authorities urge the public to limit outdoor activities during peak sun hours, stay hydrated, and wear light clothing. Additionally, never leave children or pets in parked vehicles and check on vulnerable individuals regularly.
Stay safe and hydrated during this extreme heat. Take care of yourself and those around you.
