Tacloban City is significantly reducing this year's Sangyaw Festival activities in light of the ongoing fuel crisis. Local officials announced the cancellation of major events to focus on emergency response for the community.

The city's annual fiesta on June 30 honors Santo Niño, but this year, key events such as the Sangyaw Float Competition, Sangyaw Drum and Lyre Competition, Sangyaw Mardi Gras, and the Lamrag Competition have been scrapped.

Mayor Alfred Romualdez stated that the city government must prioritize addressing fuel supply disruptions and redirect resources to essential services.

While the specific budget for this year's festival has not been disclosed, previous celebrations typically involve millions of pesos for logistics, performances, and public events.

In an advisory from the City Tourism Operations Office, officials emphasized that the decision was made to ensure public safety and wellbeing during this challenging time.

Despite the cancellations, some traditional events will still take place, including the pre-Balyuan activities, traditional Balyuan rites, Sangyaw Dream Run, Sangyaw Parade of Lights, Festival Dance Competition, Miss Tacloban 2026, and the Sangyaw Music Festival.

The City Tourism Operations Office also expressed gratitude to schools and performers who had prepared for the canceled events, asking for the public's understanding.

The Sangyaw Festival is a highlight of Tacloban's annual celebrations, showcasing Waray culture and heritage through vibrant performances and rituals.
