Hidilyn Diaz's weightlifting gym in Mampang, Zamboanga City, is set to enhance its training capabilities with new equipment from the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC). This upgrade arrives at a pivotal time, following the gym's success in producing multiple international champions.
Recent Success at International Championships
In August, young athletes Alexsandra Ann Diaz and Jhodie Peralta achieved remarkable success at the Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Diaz, 15, completed a golden sweep in the women’s 49 kg category, while 16-year-old Peralta secured five medals across two divisions.
I’m happy to see that a lot of our youth are trying weightlifting and are dreaming to become medalists.
Hidilyn Diaz, Philippine Olympic Gold Medalist
The new equipment includes sets of weights, steel bars, dumbbells, and medicine balls, which will support over 20 grassroots athletes training at the facility. Diaz expressed her delight over the continued interest in weightlifting among local youth.
A Legacy of Excellence
Established in 2017, the gym has become a training ground for aspiring weightlifters in the area. Diaz, who made history as the Philippines' first Olympic gold medalist, has long advocated for the growth of weightlifting at the grassroots level.
In addition to her work in Zamboanga, Diaz also manages the HD Weightlifting Academy in Jala-jala, Rizal, alongside her husband and coach, Julius Naranjo. Her efforts have been instrumental in elevating the sport's profile, including its acceptance as a regular event in the Palarong Pambansa.
