Alex Eala's campaign at the WTA 500 Bad Homburg Open concluded in the first round as she succumbed to Elise Mertens, 3-6, 3-6, on Tuesday.

Eala started positively, racing to a 3-1 lead in the opening set. However, Mertens quickly turned the tide, winning five consecutive games to seize the first set.

The Belgian maintained her momentum, claiming three straight games to start the second set. Eala fought back, notably saving three match points in the eighth game.

Despite her efforts, Mertens, ranked No. 26 in the world, closed out the match decisively in one hour and 24 minutes, marking her third consecutive victory over Eala.

Looking Ahead to Doubles Competition

Following her singles exit, Eala will shift her focus to doubles, where she will partner with tennis legend Venus Williams.

The duo is set to face the Australian-American team of Alexandra Osborne and Catherine Harrison in their first match on Wednesday.
