Filipina tennis player Alex Eala has set her sights on the Bad Homburg Open, where she will face Elise Mertens of Belgium in the first round on Monday.

Eala, 21, is coming off a semifinal loss at the 2026 Berlin Open, where she was defeated by Linda Noskova of the Czech Republic with a score of 6-2, 6-4.

As Eala prepares to meet Mertens, the 30-year-old Belgian and World No. 24 has previously triumphed over her in two encounters, including a decisive 6-2, 6-1 win at the 2026 Madrid Open.

This upcoming match marks their first meeting on grass, a surface Eala has shown confidence on, having achieved notable victories against higher-ranked players like World No. 2 Elena Rybakina and World No. 8 Elina Svitolina in Berlin.

Eala's Growth on Grass Courts

Eala has demonstrated significant improvement with her aggressive forehand and shot variety, making her a formidable opponent.

Eala's grass court experience has been growing; last year she made her mark by reaching the Nottingham Open's main draw and finishing as a runner-up at the Eastbourne Open.

In doubles, Eala was set to compete alongside tennis icon Venus Williams, but their match against Shuko Aoyama and Liang En-shuo was cancelled due to withdrawal.
