Ateneo de Davao University (AdDU) commemorated the life of student-athlete Rene Clert 'Bobet' Baterbonia on June 15, 2026, as his remains were prepared for transport back to Talacogon, Agusan del Sur.
The farewell ceremony marked the culmination of a public mourning period, drawing a large gathering of teammates, friends, and university officials. Baterbonia's family was central to this emotional day.
A Controversial Farewell
Tensions surfaced during the memorial on June 14, when legal representatives for the Baterbonia family were denied entry by university authorities. Atty. Israelito Torreon expressed frustration over the unexpected barrier, which interrupted critical discussions about transferring the athlete's remains.
I was supposed to confer with my clients regarding the preparation for the transfer of the cadaver from Davao City to Agusan.

As the community grieved, AdDU's president, Fr. Karel San Juan, SJ, announced that the Senior High School gym will be renamed the Rene Baterbonia Covered Court (RBCC). This gesture aims to honor Baterbonia's legacy and inspire future generations.
Coach Jess Evangelio emphasized the significance of this tribute, stating that Baterbonia's name will forever resonate within the walls of the court.
While the university reflects on Baterbonia's impact, concerns linger about the safety measures in place during the team-building event that preceded his untimely death.
