ZAMBALES – The Philippines celebrated the 10th anniversary of its landmark victory in the West Philippine Sea on July 12, 2026, with a vibrant event themed 'Bayanihan sa Karagatan: Liwanag ng Kalayaan, Tanglaw ng Karagatan' (Community Solidarity at Sea: Light of Freedom, Beacon of the Seas).
Held in Masinloc, the commemoration drew government officials, local fishermen, and community members, marking the 2016 arbitral ruling that invalidated China's claims over the contested waters.
The ruling, issued by an international tribunal, recognized the Philippines' rights over its exclusive economic zone under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

Zambales Governor Jun Ebdane highlighted the province's dedication to maritime issues, emphasizing that Zambales was a significant contributor during the legal battle for the arbitral decision.
He also reiterated the importance of Bajo de Masinloc, or Scarborough Shoal, which the Masinloc Municipal Council officially claimed as part of its territory in March 2011.
Ebdane announced initiatives aimed at enhancing the livelihoods and resilience of local fishermen, who he described as vital symbols of the nation’s maritime presence.
Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro, who also attended the event, echoed the call for enduring commitment to safeguarding Philippine maritime rights, stating the importance of collective efforts to open the West Philippine Sea for future generations.

Teodoro, along with other officials, distributed livelihood equipment and food packs to 3,500 families from coastal communities, reinforcing support for those reliant on the sea.
Second District Representative Doris Maniquiz expressed gratitude for the Marcos administration's diplomatic approach to the West Philippine Sea, commending Teodoro's leadership.
Masinloc Mayor Hazel Lim also voiced strong support for the government's initiatives, recognizing the direct benefits the town gains from its marine resources.
As celebrations continued, Ebdane urged unity among the residents, reaffirming their claim over Scarborough Shoal and the West Philippine Sea.
