Three incumbent Members of Parliament (MPs) from the Bangsamoro Transition Authority (BTA) face disqualification ahead of the 2026 elections. A petition was submitted to the Commission on Elections (Comelec), citing violations of the Bangsamoro Electoral Code.
Allegations of Dual Membership
The respondents filed Certificates of Acceptance of Nomination with Affidavit of Non-Affinity for the BFP, declaring that they had not changed party membership in the last six months.
Haron Suraik Budzal, Petitioner
- Suwaib L. Oranon - BFP's first nominee
- Dan S. Asnawie - fourth nominee
- Sheik Mohidin M. Usman - 25th nominee
Petitioner Haron Suraik Budzal, a registered voter from Sultan Kudarat, filed the petition on May 15, 2026. He alleges that the MPs are still active members of the United Bangsamoro Justice Party (UBJP), the political wing of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF). Budzal claims they took an oath as members of the Bangsamoro Federalist Party (BFP) without resigning from the UBJP.
The petition argues that the MPs failed to adhere to Comelec Resolution No. 11293, which mandates a six-month waiting period before changing party affiliations. Budzal points to UBJP records indicating the three continue to hold significant positions within the party.
This disqualification move comes amidst rising tensions within BARMM politics, particularly as the region prepares for the long-awaited 2026 parliamentary elections. The growing rivalry between the BFP and UBJP has led to accusations of political opportunism.
The case remains pending before the Comelec, with no immediate response from the candidates or the BFP.
