A Chinese Navy carrier fleet, identified as the Liaoning Carrier Group, was tracked passing through the waters near Mindanao last week, according to the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ (AFP) Western Mindanao Command (WestMinCom).
Increased Military Vigilance in the Region
The Liaoning Carrier Group's transit was continuous and expeditious.
WestMinCom Statement
WestMinCom reported that the fleet was first detected northwest of Talulu Point in Siocon, Zamboanga del Norte, on October 22. It was subsequently monitored moving toward the Celebes Sea, a critical maritime area shared with Indonesia and Malaysia.
In response to the fleet's movements, the Philippine Navy has increased its presence in the area, dispatching frigates and patrol vessels to ensure maritime security.
Military officials confirmed that the carrier group was estimated to have exited the Western Mindanao area around 11 p.m. on the same day of detection. Continuous coordination among military units has been emphasized to maintain situational awareness.
The monitoring of this Chinese naval activity comes at a time of heightened tension in the South China Sea, where similar incursions have sparked diplomatic disputes. The Philippine government urges citizens to remain calm and informed, relying on official sources for updates.
