In anticipation of the September 14 parliamentary elections, Peace Adviser Mel Senen Sarmiento has called on leaders and communities in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) to maintain unity and calm.

This election marks a significant step in the peace process established by the Bangsamoro Organic Law (BOL). Sarmiento highlighted the importance of adhering to the rule of law and maintaining stability during this crucial period.
Concerns loom over potential violence, as previous local elections in May 2025 saw over 700 incidents linked to election-related unrest, resulting in 240 deaths. Sarmiento urged all parties to utilize legal channels to resolve disputes.
He emphasized that the focus should remain on fostering a progressive BARMM, which was the intended purpose of granting autonomy. The upcoming elections are not merely a political event but a chance for the region to define its future.
As Sarmiento noted, the officials elected will hold both legislative and executive powers, carrying the responsibility of guiding the region towards prosperity. He encouraged voters to participate actively and choose wisely.
