The recent parliamentary elections in Lanao del Sur were conducted peacefully, according to Lanao del Sur 1st District Representative Zia Alonto Adiong. This marks a historic moment for the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) as it transitions from interim governance to a directly elected leadership.
A New Era for BARMM
This will be the foundation of the regular BARMM government, which will enable it to exercise its true autonomy.

Adiong noted that the elections are a critical test for new leaders, who will be tasked with governance based on democratic principles. The 80-seat parliament is designed to encourage broader representation, moving away from traditional personality politics.
The composition of the parliament includes 40 seats for proportional party representation, 32 for single-district representation, and 8 for sectoral representation. However, the balance of power among these seats will take shape only after the parliament convenes.
In addressing concerns about voter turnout, Adiong urged patience, stating, "We cannot say there is a low turnout right now until voting is complete and results are tabulated." He emphasized that parliamentary elections typically have different dynamics compared to local and national races.
Voter engagement was also noted positively, as Adiong expressed satisfaction with the turnout, stating, "We are pleased to see many voters going to polling precincts to cast their ballots." He called for unity and shared responsibility among the elected leaders following the elections.
The peaceful conduct of these elections is a crucial step in establishing a stable governance framework in the Bangsamoro region, which has faced historical challenges in achieving autonomy.
