The GMA Kapuso Foundation has delivered essential food packs and drinking water to 6,000 residents affected by a 7.8-magnitude earthquake in Gani, Sarangani. This earthquake struck Mindanao on Monday, causing significant destruction.
Challenges in Delivering Aid
Many areas, especially Glan, have faced isolation due to damaged roads and bridges. This has complicated relief efforts as residents struggle with destroyed homes and loss of basic utilities.
“’Pag tapos ng lindol, natakot kami lumabas. Napasabak kami, sa plaza kami nakatira,” said resident Carlos Blatang Jr.
The GMA Kapuso Foundation team utilized a fish carrier from Marchael Sea Ventures Corporation to transport aid. On arrival, they transferred to smaller boats to navigate the challenging waters and reach the affected communities.
“Thank you po sa GMA Kapuso na dumating dito sa Glan, Sarangani province, upang tumulong sa amin, sa mga mahihirap na nalindulan,” shared resident Lovely Joy Vendiola.
Relief operations are set to continue, with further distributions planned for three barangays in General Santos City and Malapatan, Sarangani. The foundation encourages those who wish to contribute to its efforts to donate through various banking and online platforms.
Ongoing Needs and Community Impact
As the reported death toll from the earthquake rises to 53, according to the Bureau of Fire Protection, the urgent need for assistance remains. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council previously reported 45 fatalities, highlighting the escalating crisis.
