The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) announced a yellow alert for the Visayas grid on Tuesday afternoon.
This alert was triggered by the unexpected shutdown of three power plants, coinciding with an increase in electricity demand.
The yellow alert is effective from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Although the current power supply can meet demand, the alert serves as a warning that any further plant failures could lead to brownouts.
For context, the Visayas grid reported an available capacity of 2,684 megawatts (MW), while the demand stood at 2,512 MW. The region often relies on electricity imports from Luzon and Mindanao to stabilize its supply.
