The Department of Energy (DOE) has expressed support for local government proposals to declare an 'energy emergency' in Cebu. This comes as the Visayas grid faces severe supply constraints that have disrupted daily activities and economic operations.
Government Response to Power Supply Crisis
If the local government decides to declare an energy emergency, we can support that.
Sharon Garin, DOE Assistant Secretary
Assistant Secretary Sharon Garin emphasized the need for urgent action, noting the situation has escalated beyond mere technical issues. The DOE is responding to pressure from local authorities to manage the crisis effectively.
The national government has tasked the DOE with a one-month deadline to improve the situation. Garin confirmed that the department is collaborating with key agencies, including the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) and the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC), to mitigate the power disruptions.
She stated, 'We do not wait for an emergency declaration... We are already working on it to limit the disruptions.' This proactive approach indicates the urgency of the current energy crisis in the region.
The ongoing power supply issues in the Visayas are not new; however, the current situation serves as a reminder of the need for sustainable energy solutions. The region's reliance on consistent energy supply is critical as it impacts both daily life and economic growth.
