A Regional Trial Court (RTC) in Talisay City has issued arrest warrants for Edward Ligas, a radio commentator and boxing judge, over three counts of cyber libel.
The warrants were issued on June 22, 2026, by RTC Branch 65, each requiring bail of P48,000, totaling P144,000.
Ligas voluntarily surrendered the following day and posted bail, receiving a release order shortly thereafter.
Legal Proceedings Ahead
Ligas' arraignment and pre-trial conference are set for August 3, 2026.
These arrest warrants will not shake or stop me from continuing to expose the widespread corruption of flood control projects in this country.
Edward Ligas, Radio Commentator
The charges stem from accusations made by Engineer Jerome Awit, CEO of ZLREJ Trading and Construction Corp., regarding a substandard flood control project that collapsed in October 2024.
Awit claims that Ligas falsely accused him and his company of corruption on social media.
A Broader Conversation on Online Speech
Awit expressed concern about the implications of online statements, emphasizing that freedom of speech is not absolute.
- Ligas plans to continue his advocacy despite the legal challenges.
- Awit feels personally affected by the accusations, stating his company's reputation is at stake.
The case highlights ongoing tensions in the Philippines regarding the balance between free expression and accountability for social media users.
As more individuals leverage platforms to voice opinions, the legal system's approach to cyber libel remains under scrutiny.
