Domestic workers in the Zamboanga Peninsula are set to benefit from a wage increase, with new rates taking effect on May 20. The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) announced this after the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board (RTWPB-IX) issued Wage Order No. RIX-DW-06.
The wage hike, which varies between ₱500 and ₱1,000 per month, follows public hearings and surveys held by the RTWPB-IX to assess the needs of domestic workers.
Details of the Wage Increase
Under the new wage order, the minimum monthly salary for domestic workers in chartered cities and first-class municipalities will rise from ₱5,500 to ₱6,000. In Sulu province, workers in first-class municipalities will see their wages increase from ₱5,000 to ₱6,000, while other municipalities will see an increase from ₱5,000 to ₱5,500.
This increase is expected to benefit approximately 18,984 domestic workers in the region, including 2,491 who live with their employers.
Background and Compliance Efforts
The previous wage order for domestic workers in the area was established on March 18 of last year. The new wage order reflects considerations of domestic workers' needs, employers' capacity to pay, and current socio-economic conditions.
To ensure compliance, DOLE plans to conduct information campaigns throughout the region.
The RTWPB-IX conducted public hearings and surveys to determine the wage increase, considering the needs of domestic workers.
