A tanker was reportedly struck by unidentified projectiles off the coast of the United Arab Emirates, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) on Monday. Thankfully, all crew members on board are safe following the incident.
The attack occurred approximately 78 nautical miles north of Fujairah, leading UKMTO to advise vessels in the area to exercise caution while authorities investigate the situation.
This incident comes amid ongoing tensions between the US and Iran, particularly following a ceasefire in the Middle East conflict that took effect on April 8.
Iran has maintained significant control over the crucial Strait of Hormuz, prompting the US to implement a naval blockade as a countermeasure.
US to Escort Ships Through Hormuz
In response to rising threats, US President Donald Trump announced plans to escort commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz starting Monday. The US Central Command will deploy guided-missile destroyers, over 100 aircraft, and a substantial number of service members to ensure safe passage.
As of late April, more than 900 commercial vessels were navigating the Gulf, a decline from over 1,100 at the start of the ongoing conflict.
