Southeast Asia's strategy to combat the energy crisis, exacerbated by the Middle East conflict, is being undermined by internal disputes, a senior Cambodian diplomat stated.

Kung Phoak, Cambodia's representative to ASEAN, highlighted the need for member nations to resolve conflicts quickly to better address the energy crisis.

The ASEAN summit in the Philippines this week will address these issues as countries seek to finalize an oil-sharing agreement to enhance regional energy security.

Urgent Need for Unity

Kung Phoak emphasized that resolving disputes will allow ASEAN to focus on proactive solutions rather than merely reacting to the crisis. He urged members to act swiftly.

In response to the energy crisis, many governments are limiting fuel usage and implementing measures to secure access to necessary resources.

Challenges from Regional Conflicts

The ongoing civil war in Myanmar and heightened tensions between Thailand and Cambodia complicate ASEAN's unity.

Despite a ceasefire agreement in December, border issues remain unresolved, with Kung Phoak noting Thailand's lack of responsiveness to Cambodia's requests for dialogue.

Leaving the situation lingering like this is not in the benefit of either of us.

Additionally, Kung Phoak criticized Thailand's recent decision to end an agreement on maritime disputes, although he remains hopeful for a resolution through international legal frameworks.

Prospects for Myanmar

Kung Phoak welcomed the transfer of Myanmar's ousted leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, to house arrest, seeing it as a potential step toward resolving the ongoing civil conflict.

Calls for ASEAN engagement with Myanmar continue, as member states seek to address the desires for peace and stability among the Myanmar populace.
