Russia has unilaterally declared a ceasefire with Ukraine from May 8 to 9, coinciding with its annual Victory Day celebrations. The announcement comes with a stark warning from Moscow.

President Vladimir Putin initially proposed the truce during a phone conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump last week. The Russian defense ministry confirmed the ceasefire, expressing hope that Ukraine would reciprocate.

In accordance with a decision of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Armed Forces, a ceasefire has been declared from May 8–9, 2026 ... We hope that the Ukrainian side will follow suit.

The defense ministry further stated that any attempts by Kyiv to disrupt the Victory Day celebrations would prompt a "massive missile strike" on the Ukrainian capital.

Officials have advised civilians and foreign diplomats in Kyiv to evacuate the city to ensure their safety amid rising tensions.
