Tensions in the Gulf escalated dramatically on Sunday after a cargo ship was struck off Qatar's coast, prompting Iran to issue threats against US interests in the region.

The freighter, reportedly sailing under the US flag, was hit by a drone northeast of Mesaieed after leaving Abu Dhabi, according to Qatar's defense ministry.

The UK Maritime Trade Operations center confirmed the incident, stating that the ship experienced a small fire, which has since been extinguished, with no casualties or environmental damage reported.

Iran's Fars news agency linked the vessel to the United States, heightening concerns about the ongoing military standoff.

The situation follows threats from Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, who vowed to retaliate against any attacks on Iranian tankers. They warned that such actions would lead to severe repercussions for American assets in the region.

Any attack on Iranian tankers and commercial vessels will result in a heavy attack on one of the American centers in the region and enemy ships.

Kuwait also reported an attempted drone attack, which was neutralized by its armed forces, indicating a broader pattern of hostility in the airspace.

Iran has tightened its grip on the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial passage for global oil shipments, aiming to exert economic pressure on the US and its allies.

In response, the US Navy has increased operations, including blockades and interventions against Iranian vessels.

The US government is currently awaiting Iran's response to a proposed deal aimed at extending a ceasefire and facilitating peace talks.

Iran's Foreign Minister criticized the US for escalating tensions, questioning the sincerity of its diplomatic efforts.

Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Qatar's leadership to discuss mediation efforts, underscoring the importance of regional diplomacy.

As negotiations loom, the situation remains volatile, with potential ramifications for international shipping and regional stability.
