Russian President Vladimir Putin welcomed Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico in the Kremlin on Saturday, making Fico the only EU leader to attend this year's scaled-back Victory Day celebrations.

Slovakia, reliant on Russian oil, maintains a friendly relationship with the Kremlin, making it stand out among EU nations.

This marks Fico's second visit to Russia for the significant event, reflecting his skepticism towards EU support for Ukraine.

Significant Diplomatic Exchange

"I know there were some difficulties with your trip to Moscow. But the important thing is that you're here," said Putin during their meeting.

Fico faced challenges in airspace access on his way to Moscow, with several European countries denying his plane passage.

Putin expressed hope for renewed bilateral cooperation, which had been stalled by previous Slovak administrations.

Energy Cooperation and Historical Remembrance

"We will do everything we can to meet the Slovak Republic's energy needs," Putin assured Fico.

Fico emphasized that his visit was a tribute to WWII victims and aimed to address key issues in their bilateral ties.

"I oppose creating any kind of new Iron Curtain between Europe and Russia," Fico stated, advocating for friendly relations.

Unlike past years, Fico did not attend the military parade at Moscow's Red Square, which was devoid of military hardware this year.

Instead, he honored fallen soldiers at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, a significant memorial in Russia.

Fico's visit has drawn criticism from German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, reflecting the ongoing tensions within the EU regarding relations with Russia.

Relations between Russia and the EU have deteriorated significantly since the onset of the Ukraine conflict four years ago.
