[OPINION] Rethinking Security in the Indo-Pacific: A Practical Approach

In Southeast Asia, security is increasingly viewed through the lens of daily concerns rather than distant geopolitical conflicts. This shift emphasizes the importance of practical issues such as energy availability, food supply, and economic stability.

A Shift in Security Focus

• Food Security: Meeting agricultural challenges.
• Economic Cooperation: Strengthening trade relationships.

Recent engagements between Canada and ASEAN, particularly the Philippines, highlight this transformation. The ongoing discussions for the ASEAN-Canada Free Trade Agreement (ACAFTA) aim to enhance business opportunities across the region, encompassing over 850 million people.

Canada’s commitment was reinforced by Minister of Foreign Affairs Anita Anand during her recent visit to Manila for the ASEAN Post-Ministerial Conference. She emphasized that security now encapsulates more than military alliances; it includes energy security, climate resilience, and sustainable economic growth.

This perspective aligns with the Philippines’ strategic partnership with Canada, elevated during President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s visit.
