In the wake of a devastating 7.4-magnitude earthquake, Colombia's President Abelardo de la Espriella has called on U.S. President Donald Trump to temporarily lift tariffs imposed on Colombian goods.
Economic Strain Following Natural Disaster
I asked him to consider temporarily suspending the high tariffs that are affecting Colombian products, in order to give some relief to our business owners, who are facing very difficult times due to the effects of the earthquake.
Abelardo de la Espriella, President of Colombia
The tariffs on Colombian imports, which increased from 10 percent to 12.5 percent last month, are significantly impacting the country's economy as it navigates the aftermath of the earthquake that has left nearly 300 dead and thousands injured.
- 287 confirmed fatalities due to the earthquake
- Approximately 13,000 homes destroyed
- 379 individuals reported missing
During a brief conversation with Trump, de la Espriella noted that the U.S. leader expressed condolences for the tragedy. The Colombian president emphasized the urgent need for support to rebuild the nation.
The recent tariff increase replaced an expiring global duty from earlier this year, complicating the recovery efforts. De la Espriella, who took office after former President Gustavo Petro, is already facing significant rebuilding challenges.
In addition to appealing for tariff relief, de la Espriella is working to strengthen Colombia's military ties with the United States and Israel as part of his broader strategy to combat guerrilla movements and enhance national security.
