Austria has expelled three staff members from the Russian embassy, citing suspicions of espionage. Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger announced the decision on Monday, emphasizing a new approach to countering espionage.
The Russian embassy reacted strongly, labeling the expulsion as "outrageous" and threatening a "harsh" response.
According to Austria's foreign ministry, the expelled individuals were involved in activities that compromised security, including data interception from international organizations in Vienna.
Government's Commitment to National Security
Meinl-Reisinger stated, "Espionage is a security problem for Austria. We are taking consistent action against it." She noted that the government has communicated its concerns about the Russian embassy's activities, especially regarding the suspicious installations on its roof.
It is unacceptable for diplomatic immunity to be used to conduct espionage.

Austria has faced several Russian espionage scandals in recent years, prompting the coalition government to expand the definition of spying offenses. The country currently hosts around 220 accredited Russian embassy staff, amidst its role as a hub for international organizations.
This expulsion follows a series of similar actions since the onset of Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, marking a significant shift in Austria's diplomatic stance.
