Twenty-two Filipino seafarers arrived at Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila on August 30, 2026, after being evacuated from Ukraine. Their repatriation followed a missile strike on their bulk carrier, M/V Antonia S, while docked at Chornomorsk Port.

Details of the Attack and Evacuation

The missile attack occurred on August 19. Local authorities promptly evacuated the crew to a designated shelter within the port. They remained there until arrangements for their return to the Philippines were completed.

We are grateful for the support that enabled our safe return home.

  • Seafarers received medical assistance upon arrival.
  • Financial aid was provided through the DMW AKSYON Fund under the UPLIFT initiative.

Upon their return, the seafarers were met by officials from the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW). Augusto B. San Diego III, DMW Officer-in-Charge, urged the crew to assert their rights, especially regarding safety concerns at sea.

San Diego also called for prayers for Filipino seafarers still working in conflict zones, highlighting the ongoing dangers faced by those in maritime professions.

The captain credited a foreign security officer aboard for issuing a timely warning that allowed the crew to take cover before the missile struck.

Following their arrival, the returning seafarers will undergo medical and psychological assessments organized by their licensed manning agency.

The DMW reiterated the importance of monitoring the welfare of Filipino seafarers, especially in areas affected by armed conflict, and emphasized adherence to safety protocols.
