Residents of Barangay Miisi in Daraga, Albay, are under threat from volcanic debris following an ashfall on May 2. The local government has declared a state of calamity to facilitate relief and rehabilitation efforts.
Daraga Mayor Victor Perete stated that at least five villages could be at risk if heavy rains occur, as loose volcanic materials may flow downhill, endangering nearby communities.
Initial reports indicate that around 200 farmers have been affected, with crops either buried or damaged by the ashfall.
During recent inspections, Perete noted that lahar deposits have changed flow paths, which could exacerbate risks during rainfall.
Strict Measures Implemented for Safety
To ensure public safety, officials have enforced a strict no-human-activity policy in the affected areas, particularly concerning farming and recreational activities.
Both the Philippine National Police and barangay officials are maintaining 24/7 monitoring in the region.
Consultations with experts are ongoing, while the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has advised avoiding any immediate intervention in the affected zone.
