The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has reported a notable increase in sulfur dioxide emissions from Taal Volcano. On May 8, the volcano released 653 metric tons of sulfur dioxide, a figure more than double the 308 metric tons recorded just a day earlier.

Despite this uptick in emissions, Phivolcs classified the activity as a 'weak emission,' with plumes reaching heights of up to 600 meters.

Seismic Activity and Volcanic Earthquakes

The volcano's seismic activity also intensified, registering nine volcanic earthquakes and one two-minute volcanic tremor during the monitoring period. From May 5 to 7, Phivolcs detected 22 volcanic earthquakes, a significant rise from the previous three-day period, which recorded only nine.

Volcanic earthquakes stem from magmatic processes occurring beneath or near the volcano, while tremors are low-frequency signals typically linked to volcanic activity.

No signs of hot volcanic fluid upwelling were observed in the main crater lake at Taal Volcano Island, and no volcanic smog, or 'vog,' was detected during this period.

Despite the heightened emissions and seismic activity, Taal Volcano remains under Alert Level 1, indicating a low level of unrest. Phivolcs cautioned that this status should not lead to complacency, as the volcano is still in an abnormal condition.

The agency emphasized that the threat of eruptive activity remains and urged the public to stay vigilant.
