Residents of Quezon and Cavite provinces are preparing for dangerously high heat index levels on May 9 and 10, 2026. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) has issued a warning, indicating that temperatures could reach alarming heights.
According to Pagasa's bulletin released on May 8, Cavite City is expected to experience a heat index of 44°C on Saturday and 43°C on Sunday. In Quezon province, Tayabas City may see temperatures between 41°C and 42°C, while Infanta and Mulanay are projected to reach 42°C both days.
Understanding Heat Index Levels
The heat index measures the discomfort level caused by temperature and humidity. Pagasa categorizes these levels into four groups: 'caution' (27°C to 32°C), 'extreme caution' (33°C to 41°C), 'danger' (42°C to 51°C), and 'extreme danger' (52°C and above). During 'danger' and 'extreme caution' periods, residents are at risk for heat cramps and heat exhaustion.
Authorities recommend minimizing outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day, staying hydrated, wearing light clothing, and checking on vulnerable individuals, including children and the elderly.
Prolonged exposure to extreme heat can lead to serious health risks, including heat stroke. Everyone is advised to take precautions.
