The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is set to finish a new flood control structure in Calumpit, Bulacan by March 2027. This project will replace an existing dike, described by DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon as ineffective.

During a recent inspection with Calumpit Mayor Lem Faustino, Dizon highlighted the ongoing demolition of the old structure along the Bagbag River. He expressed concerns about severe flooding in the area, where water levels can exceed a person's height.

Ang gagawin natin dito ay demolisyon ang kasalukuyang walang silbi, at tayo ay magtatayo ng bagong proyekto. Gagawin natin ito ng tama sa pagkakataong ito.

Vince Dizon

The new construction, estimated to cost P600 million, is funded by the 2026 national budget's contingent fund. The DPWH Bulacan 1st District Engineering Office is overseeing the implementation.

According to the DPWH's project briefer, the new structure aims to replace old and deteriorating revetment systems to improve their effectiveness and restore their intended flood control capabilities.

Once completed, the new structure will protect approximately 3,000 residents from flooding. Dizon also revealed that the previous project was managed by a dismissed engineer, highlighting the need for higher standards in flood control.

Additionally, Dizon stated that substandard flood control projects in nearby barangays will also be addressed.

Concerns about residents affected by the demolition were raised, with 54 families needing relocation. Dizon pledged to ensure they receive compensation and suitable housing.

Dahil kailangan nating palawakin ang ilog at maraming lugar dito ang hindi maayos na naka-align sa kontrol ng baha.

To assist with the relocation process, Dizon plans to involve officials from the National Housing Authority during his next visit to the site.
