Several regions in the Visayas are experiencing dangerously high heat indices, with warnings from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa). The oppressive heat is expected to persist through the weekend.

On Friday, Borongan in Eastern Samar recorded an alarming heat index of 45°C, categorized as dangerous. Tacloban City followed closely with a heat index of 44°C, while Catarman and Catbalogan in Northern and Western Samar reported indices of 42°C.

In Western Visayas, Dumangas, Iloilo reached a heat index of 44°C, and both Roxas City and Iloilo City recorded 42°C. Meanwhile, La Granja in La Carlota City, Negros Occidental noted a slightly lower index of 41°C.

Pagasa forecasts that the extreme heat will continue over the next two days. On Sunday, Iloilo City and Dumangas may see heat indices of 43°C, while Borongan is expected to hit 43°C again.

The weather bureau classifies heat indices between 42°C and 51°C as dangerous, where heat cramps and exhaustion are likely. Prolonged exposure can lead to heat stroke.

Residents are urged to limit outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day, stay hydrated, wear light clothing, and seek cooler, shaded areas.

Local Response and Precautions

Local governments and schools are implementing various measures in response to the ongoing heat advisories. These include adjusted class schedules, online learning arrangements, and the establishment of hydration stations.

The weather forecast indicates that temperatures will range from 39°C to 43°C across much of the Visayas on Monday.
