The Department of Agriculture (DA) has initiated relief and recovery efforts in response to agricultural damage caused by the ongoing eruptions of Mayon Volcano in Albay.
So far, the DA's Bicol regional office has reported agricultural losses totaling P13.02 million. This includes damage to 102 hectares of crops, loss of 364 metric tons of production, and 33 heads of livestock.
DA Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. emphasized the agency's commitment to supporting affected farmers, focusing on providing seeds, fertilizers, farm tools, and financial assistance.
Monitoring and Support for Farmers
The DA is actively monitoring the situation and is in coordination with local governments to ensure timely delivery of aid. Livestock are being protected through evacuation efforts and health checks.
Currently, 27 evacuation sites have been established, sheltering over 1,000 livestock. The DA is also distributing feeds, ropes, masks, and veterinary supplies.
In addition, the agency has released P49 million worth of agricultural inputs, fingerlings from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, livestock supplements, and 18,470 metric tons of rice from the National Food Authority.
Farmers can also access zero-interest loans and indemnification through the Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation.
Risks and Ongoing Assessments
Despite these measures, another 534.39 hectares of farmland within Mayon's Permanent Danger Zone remain at risk. This includes 335.26 hectares of corn, 179.51 hectares of high-value crops, and 19.62 hectares of fruit trees.
The full extent of damage is still under assessment as many areas are currently inaccessible due to safety concerns.
