The United States has reiterated its commitment to collaborate with the Philippines in enhancing maritime security in the South China Sea (SCS). This pledge comes as the Philippines prepares to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the landmark 2016 Arbitral Award.
During a reception at the Philippine Embassy in Washington, DC, on July 8, Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Michael George DeSombre emphasized the significance of the Arbitral Award in peacefully resolving disputes in the region.

The Arbitral Tribunal's decision on July 12, 2016, declared China’s nine-dash line claim as illegal, providing a framework for the Philippines' national response to South China Sea issues.
Jay Batongbacal, Director of the UP Institute for Marine and Law of the Sea, noted that the ruling has united the Filipino people on foreign policy matters, demonstrating the power of international law in asserting national interests.
Charmaine Misalucha-Willoughby, an associate professor at De La Salle University, described the decision as both a legal and moral victory, emphasizing that smaller nations can leverage international law to safeguard their interests.
