In a tragic incident at Banga National High School in South Cotabato, a student opened fire, resulting in the deaths of three individuals, including two classmates. Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla revealed that the shooter had left behind notes detailing his depression and intentions to commit the act.

Remulla reported that the shooter had a significant online presence, engaging with violent content across social media platforms. Investigators are examining the student's cellphone and other electronic devices to understand his motivations.
He left a note saying that ... he was planning to do it. But the victims, he did not plan who he would shoot. It was just random.

The investigation has also led authorities to explore the 'deep dark web' for further insights into the shooter's online activities. Remulla emphasized the need for collaboration with the Department of Information and Communications Technology and Congress to address harmful online content.
In April, the shooter's parents discovered his troubling notes and attempted to intervene. Remulla highlighted the importance of recognizing depression's warning signs and providing better mental health resources for youth. He stated, "The depression is real."
Further complicating the tragedy, Remulla noted that the firearm used in the incident was legally owned by the shooter’s father, an employee of the Department of Education. The firearm was not stored securely, raising questions about gun safety.
This incident marks the third shooting involving inadequately secured firearms owned legally. Remulla plans to work with the Department of Justice to seek changes that would allow police to inspect the homes of licensed gun owners.
To enhance school safety, the government is considering implementing additional security measures, including metal detectors. While police were present outside Banga National High School and conducted bag inspections, the shooter managed to conceal his weapon.
Remulla's remarks call for a collective response from parents, schools, and lawmakers to prevent future occurrences. He stated, "I have no quarrel with gun owners. But responsibility has to stop with the gun owner."
