As artificial intelligence rapidly evolves, tech companies are increasingly looking to religious leaders for ethical guidance. This marks a significant change from Silicon Valley's historical skepticism of organized religion.

Last week, representatives from various faith groups met with executives from companies like Anthropic and OpenAI at the inaugural "Faith-AI Covenant" roundtable in New York. Organized by the Interfaith Alliance for Safer Communities, the event aimed to explore ways to integrate morality into AI technology.

Regulation can’t keep up with this. This dialogue, this direct connection is so important because the people who are building this understand the power and capabilities of what they’re building and they want to do it right — most of them.

The initiative aims to establish a set of ethical norms informed by diverse faith perspectives, including Christianity, Sikhism, and Buddhism. Baroness Joanna Shields emphasized the importance of tech executives recognizing their responsibility in shaping AI.

A variety of religious groups participated in the discussions, including the Hindu Temple Society of North America, the Baha’i International Community, and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Some faith traditions have already issued their own ethical guidelines on AI.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, for instance, has stated that while AI can enhance learning, it cannot replace divine inspiration. Similarly, the Southern Baptist Convention has called for proactive engagement with emerging technologies.

However, establishing common ethical principles presents challenges due to differing values among global faiths. Rabbi Diana Gerson noted that religious communities prioritize issues differently.

The collaboration represents a growing alliance between technology and faith, driven by the need for moral AI. Anthropic has publicly advocated for ethical AI practices, particularly after facing scrutiny over military AI applications.

Despite the positive intentions behind these discussions, skepticism remains. Critics argue that these efforts may distract from more pressing issues surrounding AI's societal impact.

At best it’s a distraction. At worst it’s diverting attention from things that really matter.

While some experts express doubt about the sincerity of tech companies in pursuing ethical AI through religious guidance, others believe the necessity for moral frameworks has become increasingly evident.

The ongoing discussions about ethical AI highlight a critical juncture for the tech industry, as it seeks to address the moral complexities of rapidly advancing technologies.
