Meta has officially discontinued its Muse Image feature following a significant backlash regarding privacy violations. This feature, launched on July 7, 2026, allowed users to generate images from public Instagram accounts but faced immediate criticism.

The decision to scrap the feature was made public on July 10, just days after its debut. Meta stated, 'We've heard the feedback that this feature missed the mark, so it's no longer available.'

Privacy advocates and industry professionals expressed strong concerns, particularly regarding the automatic opt-in nature of the feature, which many viewed as a violation of user rights. SAG-AFTRA, the union for actors and media workers, voiced its opposition, urging members to disable the feature.

SAG-AFTRA spokesperson commented on the situation, stating, 'Anything other than a clear and conspicuous opt-in for these types of uses of Instagram users’ images is unacceptable.' The union welcomed Meta's decision to discontinue Muse Image.

This incident reflects a broader trend in the tech industry, where companies are increasingly pressured to ensure transparency and user consent when utilizing AI technology. As AI tools become more pervasive, the need for clear regulations and user control is paramount.

Growing Concerns Over AI and User Privacy

With the dangers of nonconsensual digital replicas well known to all, a feature that encouraged that behavior is unwise. We appreciate its discontinuance. It is the responsible thing to do.

Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, had integrated Muse Image into its AI chatbot, marking its venture into the realm of image generation. However, the swift backlash underscores the delicate balance tech companies must maintain between innovation and user trust.
