Indonesian game developer Agate is set to take players on a journey through Southeast Asia with its upcoming title, Blades of Mirage. Unveiled at the 2026 Tokyo Game Show, the game draws from the region's diverse cultures, landscapes, and mythologies.

A New Era for Southeast Asian Gaming

Southeast Asia has long been a source of inspiration, but rarely the centerpiece.

Andhika Widya Poetra, Product Marketing Manager

Blades of Mirage is set in a fantastical world called the Brightness, inspired by various Southeast Asian cultures, including Indonesian, Filipino, Thai, and Malaysian elements. The game’s visuals, environments, and architectural designs reflect the rich heritage of these nations.

Product marketing manager Andhika Widya Poetra emphasized the need for a comprehensive representation of Southeast Asia in gaming. He stated, "No one is making one full package that can be enjoyed as Southeast Asia."

  • Incorporates local folklore and customs.
  • Features water-based weapons reflecting the region's geography.

The development team focused on integrating gameplay with cultural identity. Water-based weapons were chosen to symbolize the region's abundant rivers and seas. Poetra noted, "It’s not random... We’re thinking a water-based weapon could work in this narrative and concept."

Blades of Mirage promises a blend of rich storytelling and engaging gameplay. The developers are keen on ensuring that the game mechanics are strong enough to keep players immersed, regardless of the cultural backdrop.

While the game is expected to appeal to Southeast Asian audiences, early testing suggests that interest is also strong in markets like the United States and China. Poetra remarked, "If it’s good design and good game mechanics, they’ll enjoy it."

Set for release in 2027, Blades of Mirage represents a significant step for Agate and Southeast Asian gaming as a whole, challenging stereotypes while inviting players to explore the rich cultures of the region.
