The World Karate Federation (WKF) has introduced its new motto, 'The World is Our Dojo,' as it prepares for the Karate One Youth League in the Philippines. The tournament, supported by the Philippine Sports Commission, kicks off on May 14 at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
WKF's decision emphasizes the sport's increasing popularity, with membership rising to 200 nations worldwide. Richard Lim, president of the Karate Pilipinas Sports Federation, Inc., highlighted that karate gyms are now accessible in many parts of the globe.
'With 59 countries competing and nearly 1,000 karatekas attending, this event showcases karate's evolution into a universal combat sport,' Lim stated. The Karate One Youth League, backed by the SM Group of Companies and the Philippine Olympic Committee, is set to attract a diverse array of participants.
A Malaysian junior team has already arrived and is training with local athletes in Mandaluyong. Lim praised the Malaysian squad as among the best in the region, indicating their serious intent for the competition.
The main Malaysian contingent is expected to join other international teams, including a large 78-member squad from Australia, alongside delegations from Saudi Arabia and New Zealand.
Participants will be welcomed with a dinner hosted by the Department of Tourism before the competition begins. The second day will feature a festive opening ceremony, complete with cultural performances and a parade of flags.
Notable figures such as POC president Abraham 'Bambol' Tolentino and WKF president Antonio Espinos will attend the event, which will include competitions in 34 categories across various age divisions.
