Rory McIlroy made a significant move at the Truist Championship, posting a 4-under 67 at Quail Hollow. This performance places him four shots behind the leader, Sungjae Im, who leads the tournament at 9-under 133.
After winning his second Masters title on April 12, McIlroy faced a slow start, finishing the front nine at 1 under and eight shots off the pace. However, he found his rhythm on the back nine.
Birdies at holes 10 and 11 sparked McIlroy's momentum, energizing him as he played before a supportive crowd in Charlotte, where he has previously enjoyed success.
He continued to excel, adding birdies at 13, 15, and 16, ultimately recording a 32 on the back nine. A near-miss on the 18th hole kept him from an even better score.
It was a good day to get myself back in the hunt, and feel like I have a real chance going into the weekend.

McIlroy also achieved a personal best by hitting 14 consecutive greens in regulation. He credited his improved play to recent practice and competition.
Other notable players in contention include Tommy Fleetwood, who shot another 67, trailing Im by just one shot. Justin Thomas and PGA Tour newcomer Alex Fitzpatrick are also in the mix, two shots behind the leader.
Rickie Fowler made headlines with a stunning 8-under 63, marking the day's best round. Cameron Young, a two-time winner this season, finished the day five shots back after a 70.
Fleetwood expressed satisfaction with his results, noting that even without his best performance, he managed to score well.
Sungjae Im, recovering from a wrist injury, is optimistic about his chances after a solid performance. He is seeking his first tour victory since 2021.
I know this course very well, so I’m taking advantage of that.
