Jerick Faeldonia from Romblon has emerged victorious in the under-17 division of the One Chess Movement National 9 Districts Rapid Tournament, held on June 13, 2026, at Robinsons Galleria in Quezon City.
Faeldonia, an Arena International Master, scored 6.5 points in the seven-round Swiss system event, which featured a time control of 15 minutes with a 3-second increment.
He started strong, winning six consecutive matches against notable competitors, including Arena FIDE Master Jayrald Jade Antiporta and FIDE Master Ivan Travis Cu.
Tournament Highlights
- Faeldonia finished with a draw against National Master Al-Basher Buto in his final game.
- Ivan Travis Cu secured second place with a total of 6 points, his only loss coming from Faeldonia.
- Buto claimed the bronze medal by winning the tie-breaker among three players with 5.5 points.
Faeldonia expressed his joy, stating, "I am very happy with my performance," as he looks forward to celebrating his 16th birthday on June 22.
Currently an incoming grade 11 student at Arellano University, Faeldonia is guided by FIDE Master Rudy Ibanez and is preparing for the 2nd Bangkok Summer International Chess Open from July 28 to August 2, 2026.
